What is Manuka Honey and What are the Benefits?

Manuka honey comes from New Zealand, from the nectar of the flowers on the Manuka bush. It is said that the Manuka bush has been used for health and healing for more than 800 years.

What makes Manuka honey medicinal is that it contains naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide (what we use to clean a cut or scrape) in minimal concentration. However, the real bacteria-killing component comes from a natural substance called methylglyoxal (MG). The higher the content of MG, the stronger its effect for killing bacteria. A Unique Manuka Factor, or UMF, is given to each jar of honey as this tells its potency.
