7 Reasons You Should Be Under Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman’s body will go through many changes to keep up with the body’s demand while growing a new life.

Oftentimes, these changes come with symptoms that can make the most enjoyable time of a woman’s life feel challenging.

Fortunately, you can make your pregnancy journey an enjoyable one and find relief through prenatal chiropractic care.

Here are 7 reasons why you should include chiropractic care part of your pregnancy journey:

  1. Relieves back pain associated with pregnancy. Physical changes in your body, such as a growing abdomen, will put additional strain on your back due to an increase in the back curve.

  2. Helps with posture. The heavier the abdomen becomes, the more a tendency for the body to lean in a way that helps keep balance. Hormonal changes will loosen up muscles and joints in preparation for delivery, therefore, the body won’t be as stable or in balance as pre-pregnancy.

  3. Prepares the body for a less complicated delivery and labor. Chiropractic care helps correct subluxations in the pelvis, allowing for the baby to get into a better position for delivery.

  4. Can reduce the length of time in labor. Studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments help relax the pelvic floor muscles, which in turn, allow for the baby to pass through the birth canal much easier.

  5. Helps control nausea symptoms. Realigning your spine improves your overall nervous system, which in turn, controls the hormones that promote the nauseous feeling.

  6. Also helps relieve neck, hip, and joint pain. Experiencing pain can be debilitating physically and emotionally as well as draining to many. As your body grows another human, you want to enjoy the experience and feel energetic and confident in your body’s ability to go through the process.

  7. Benefits your developing baby. Your baby will benefit from your chiropractic adjustments because chiropractic care helps keep your immune system strong, also keeping baby healthy; proper alignment of your back and pelvis will allow for baby to pass through the birth canal easier reducing the need for forceps and vacuum extraction (which can sometimes harm the baby); and help reduce the risk of a breech delivery (in which the baby is positioned feet-first, causing complications such as the baby getting stuck and having oxygen cut off from the umbilical cord).

While chiropractic care is generally considered to be safe, there are instances in which care should be avoided such as:

  • Experiencing vaginal bleeding

  • Placenta previa or placental abruption

  • Ectopic pregnancy

  • Moderate to severe toxemia.
