3 Ways to Detox Emotionally

When we think of detox, we tend to think of cleansing the body. But did you know that many of our physical ailments come from a congested emotional state? We may think that we have life under control and that stress is just a normal part of life. Yet we don’t consider how we are surrounded by people or events that add to the emotional congestion. So what actions can you take to help life flow better?

  1. Social media. Start by analyzing what reactions you get from certain posts or news. Do the posts create a feeling of anxiety, anger, or envy? If the posts are triggering negative emotions, it may be time to reevaluate what you want more of in your own life. What we focus our attention on, follows us. You decide what you want or don’t want as part of your life.

  2. Negative people aka energy vampires. Oftentimes, we become accustomed to listening to the same stories from the same negative people. It can be difficult to cut people out of your life, especially if they are family. However, it can be extremely draining to listen to the same negative stories time and time again. If walking away from negative people in your life is not an option, maybe learning to not take things personally and setting boundaries are options to maintain a healthy relationship. If it at some point the negativity just gets to be too much, remember, it is OK to walk away and take time to be you.

  3. The work environment. Most stress comes from the workplace. Whether it’s deadlines, working overtime, or difficulties with coworkers, working in an environment that drains you can eventually lead to health...both mental and physical. So what can you do? If changing jobs is not an option, find ways to keep a positive attitude through quotes or pictures at your desk. At lunch, you can take short walks to help clear your mind, and more importantly, leave work related issues at work. Taking home issues or problems will not resolve nor make things go away because home should be your sacred space.

Taking care of your emotional wellbeing is just as important as taking care of our physical body. Don't neglect your emotions and nurture your mind too!
