Bone Broth for Amazing Skin, Healthy Gut, & Joints


What is bone broth?

Bone broth is a soup made of bones that have cooked slowly for hours. Broths have been made for years from our ancestors around the world. Before the industrialization age and the invention of refrigerators, many of our ancestors would use every piece of the animal that was hunted. The fur for clothing, the meat for food, they even ate the organ meat, which was very nutrient dense, and of course the bones. They would make bone soup AKA bone broth and also use it as a stock for their soups, gravies, and cook their grains in it too.

Why should I drink it?

Maybe we should ask Kobe Bryant and his teammates why they drink bone broth. It’s liquid gold, botox in a bowl, and healing for the gut. It is rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulfur, and even glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, which is amazing for reducing joint pain and inflammation. Those are only some of the reasons to drink it!

What are the health benefits of bone broth?

  1. Gut health - Studies show that bone broth helps with restoring the gut lining. A majority of patients have intestinal permeability AKA leaky gut that is caused by poor diet and lifestyle and have benefited from drinking bone broth. Since bone broth is rich in proline, glycine, and glutamine it acts as a patch-up for the gut.

  2. Radiant Skin - If you want plump, full, beautiful skin, you will love bone broth! Since collagen is an important component in the integrity of your skin and bone broth has it, then you can start seeing some change in the reduction of wrinkles and puffiness.

  3. Joint Health - One of the first signs of aging or trauma is pain. Ask any professional athlete what holds them back from optimal performance and they will tell you injuries and pain. Bone broth is rich in collagen and very easy for us to absorb. Gelatin is derived from collagen and helps with the building blocks or foundation for strong healthy bones.

  4. Immune Health - A healthy gut is crucial to a healthy body. Research is showing that the gut is literally connected to the health of almost every organ in the body. Sixty to eighty percent of your immune system is in the gut! The immune system becomes over vigilant when it detects invaders in the bloodstream. When there is leaky gut or intestinal permeability imagine undigested food particle squeezing their way into the bloodstream. The immune system detects an invader and creates chaos in the body. This leads to a cascade of inflammatory responses in the body attacking healthy tissue and creating an autoimmune response. Bone broth is amazing for patching up the gut with the amino acids glutamine, proline, and arginine along with the collagen and gelatin.

Where can I buy the bones or the broth?

Health food stores or your local grocery store sell bones from grass fed/pasture raised cows. You can also make it with chicken bones, fish bones, or turkey bones. I prefer beef bones.

What ingredients do I need?

  • 1-2 lbs of marrow and knuckle bones

  • 1 stalk of celery

  • 1 medium onion

  • 2-3 carrots, chopped

  • 1 teaspoon of sea salt

  • 1 tablespoon of Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Enough water to cover the bones


  1. Place bones in stock pot with vegetables, sea salt, and apple cider vinegar.

  2. Pour enough water to cover the bones.

  3. Bring to a boil.

  4. Reduce heat to low and cover with lid.

  5. Cook for 12-72 hours for beef bones, 8-24 hours for chicken bones, 6-24 for fish bones.

  6. After cooking, strain the broth and discard the bones and vegetables. Pour the broth in mason jars and store in the refrigerator.

  7. You may have to remove some of the foam/scum that rises to the top the first couple of hours.

Consume bone broth within 3 days. You may want to freeze it to extend the shelf life. However, leave at least 1-2 inches of space from the top of the lid and make sure the bone broth has cooled in the refrigerator first before your freeze it.

I typically recommend consuming 1-2 cups a day. Sip on it in the morning or make a chicken or vegetable soup with it for lunch or dinner.
