How to Stay Motivated

There are days I wake up and really not excited about life and then it drags on for the rest of the day, then the next day, and eventually for weeks. Does that sound like you?

Well that was me years ago. Don’t get me wrong, it still happens. I don’t wake up excited everyday. There are days I don’t want to wake up, but those days are far and few in between compared to before. This is just part of life, but it doesn’t mean we have to stay in the dumps.

Having a go to routine and effective strategies really helps. So I want to share what I’ve learned over the years.

#1 The 5 Second Rule - Jump out of bed using the 5,4,3,2,1 count down and as Mel Robbins says, “Launch Your Ass out of bed." This makes total sense because if we stay in bed we can talk ourselves out of getting out of bed within the first 30 seconds we wake up.

#2 Try the Breath of Fire – it’s very humbling and also known as the ego eradicator; I do a modified version (see video for how to breathe and use your arms).

  1. Think about something I am grateful for.

  2. Think about the depth of love I have for my children, parents, and spouse.

  3. Think about my future self as joyful, abundant, strong, and happy.

#3 inspirational YouTube video – I love watching motivational videos that are compilations of many great speakers and people that have failed at many things before they succeeded. Instead of listening to the constant negative news, or radio on your way to work, as you work out, or as you get ready for the day, swap that out for a 5-10 minute video. Check out Nick Vujicic "Life Without Limbs” or Israel Del Toro, two ordinary men that are having an extraordinary impact on people’s lives. They are very motivating and you and I are no different, it's a choice.

#4 Listen to Music and MOVE! - When you change your physical state you change your emotional state. Get moving and listen to some of your favorite JAMS!

#5 Empowering Self Talk – Yes, I am the crazy lady that talks to herself in the car. It’s not so crazy nowadays and easier to do because when you are in your car and you're talking to yourself, people will just think you are on a phone call. Super easy!!! How do you talk to a friend, family member, or loved one that needs a lit bit of encouragement? You lift them up with your words.

#6 Acknowledge You're Not Feeling Motivated - Not feeling motivated is only temporary and an emotion that we will all experience in our lifetime. It's an emotional state just like love, happiness, inspiration, frustration, and we GET to choose how long we want to stay there. Acknowledge it and apply one of the strategies above.

#7 Meditation – Sounds like the opposite extreme of motivation right? When you sit and get connected to your higher power, it’s like you’re getting downloads from God and the UNIVERSE. That's exciting!!!

Daily motivation is not optional, it should be part of your daily routine as is brushing your teeth, drinking water, and breathing.
